The history of one of the largest vertically integrated agro-industrial holdings in Russia and the CIS

1995

  • Establishment

  • The history of Rusagro started in 1995 with the import of sugar to Russia.
  • Over time, the Company acquired several sugar and fat-and-oil factories, elevators and also formed its own land bank. The Rusagro Group of Companies was established in 2003 to manage these assets and expand the business. The company’s progress can be divided into several key stages.

1997

  • Acquisition of assets

  • The Group acquired the first sugar factories and launched sugar production in the Belgorod region.
  • Formed its own land bank for the production of sugar beets and grain crops.

  • Purchased elevators for storing and trading grain.

2004

  • Holding establishment

  • The group focused its efforts on the sugar and agricultural business. In this regard, it made a decision to sell fat and oil assets in the South and in the Center of Russia.
  • The Group invested the proceeds to expand the land bank, the main goal of which was to provide sugar beets (the most profitable agricultural crop) to the Group's sugar factories in the Belgorod and Tambov regions.

  • In the same period, it started a project to build a modern pig-breeding complex on its own land in the Belgorod region.

2008

  • Growth and becoming a market leader in major markets

  • After acquiring two sugar factories, which were among the largest in Russia, the Group became the leading sugar producer in the country and one of the leaders in the retail brand market.
  • The construction of a pig-breeding complex in the Belgorod Region and the construction of a new complex in the Tambov Region were almost finished and were reaching their design capacity.

  • The Group continued to expand its land bank while increasing yields through the use of modern equipment and technologies.

2011

  • Entering the international stock market

  • The most important event of the year was entering the international capital markets.
  • The first public offering of the shares took place on the London Stock Exchange and brought the company about $300 million for long-term investment programs.

  • Basically, that year became a time of production records and high price volatility for the company. The production of vegetable oil got back into the business.

2012

  • The company demonstrated the highest EBITDA

  • The Group benefited from a positive pricing environment and made record-breaking investments
  • The most profitable business for the first time was the Agricultural Business Unit, where automation and precision farming projects were launched. The meat business was growing and increasing its assets in the form of the construction of new pig farms and the beginning of the construction of a new modern slaughterhouse in the Tambov region.

  • The major events of the year for the oil and fat division marked the first full year of operation of the Bezenchuksky oil extraction plant and the purchase of the "Mechta Khozaiki'' trademark, under which the fat plant in Yekaterinburg started producing mayonnaise. In 2012, the oil and fat business showed a record financial result.

2014

  • The company hit record-breaking results amid volatility in exchange and loan rates

  • Reduced government support, changes in retail, and lower consumer income. At the end of the year, the Group's revenue increased to RUB 59.1 billion, EBITDA reached RUB 18.1 billion, and net profit amounted to RUB 20.2 billion
